Surviving spouse may obtain a new plate in their name if not remarried and must complete Surviving Spouse Certification listed on application. The Gold Star Family license plate is available to immediate family members (parent, spouse, sibling or child) of fallen service members as certified by the Affidavit of Relationship on the application form. To apply for the plate, you must present one of the following documents: DD-2064 D.O.D. Certificate of Death (Overseas) or a DD-1300 D.O.D. Report of Casualty. This plate allows free parking at municipal parking meters. There is no cost for this plate. You may be issued three plates within the plate class to include Gold Star Family, Gold Star Family Motorcycle, and Gold Star Family Personalized. This plate is available by mail only.

You may get a personalized version of the plate that contains letters or numbers or both and the “&” symbol. Text is limited to six characters including spaces and will be granted based on availability.

Veteran

The Veteran license plate is available to South Carolina residents who have served in the United States Armed Forces active or reserved components. To apply for the plate, you must present your Department of Defense Form DD-214, indicating that you were honorably discharged, along with a completed Application for Military Plate (MV-37). Only three plates within the Veteran plate class to include Veteran, Veteran Motorcycle and Veteran Wheelchair may be issued to vehicles registered in your name. The cost for this plate is the regular registration fee.

To receive the handicapped privileges , you must be certified permanently handicapped by a licensed physician on the Disabled License Plate and Placard Application (SCDMV Form RG-007A).

Korean Veteran

Korean War Veteran license plate is available to South Carolina residents who served on active duty during the Korean War. You must present a US Department of Defense Form DD-214 or other official documentation certifying active duty service during the time period of June 25, 1950 to July 27, 1954, or provide certification of receiving the Korean War Service Medal along with a completed Application for Military License Plate (MV-37). The cost for the plate is the regular registration fee. This plate can be purchased for cars, motorcycles or light trucks with an empty weight of 9,000 pounds or less and a gross vehicle weight of 11,000 pounds or less. You may be issued three plates. This plate is available by mail only.
